Initial Storyboards

With a story outline ready, and my characters mostly set, I decided that with some of the Summer Holidays still left it would make sense to start storyboarding my film out.

1. A young girl (Sofia) and a young boy (Bagboy) meet one day as Sofia is playing across the fence. She finds the boy peculiar in his attire and looks up to see what he is holding.

2. It turns out to be a kite! Amused, she jumps off the fence and approaches him, there is an awkward silence.

3. The silence continues....and then Bagboy offers the Spindle and Kite to Sofia with a resounding HMM! Sofia is confused by this gesture but Bagboy is persistent. Sofia takes it and Bagboy nods politely and walks off.

3. End of Day One. Day Two. Sofia is reading to herself when suddenly a shadow looms over her, frightening her.

4. Annoyed, Sofia steadies herself and approaches Bagboy, angrily eyeballing him.

5. Dismissing her angry complete, Bagboy once again offers the Kite with a resounding HMM! Sofia sighs and, warily takes the Kite from him once again. Just like before, he nods politely and walks off.

This process of repetition continues for 4 more days, each time becoming more quicker and fast paced. Until Day 7 arrives...

6. Day Seven. Sofia is drawing a sketch of Bagboy this time, and the slightest noise makes her look towards the end of the street for the shy, young boy. It turns out to be a cat however and Sofia becomes disappointed as he is usually there by now...

7. A shadow looms over Sofia's face and looking up, she sees a Kite flying in the distance. Immediately thinking this must be Bagboy, she hurries towards it, thinking perhaps she could come and meet him today. The camera pans down slowly as we see her run towards the distance and the drawing still in the foreground. Upon arriving to where the Kite is being flown, Sofia see's it and simply smiles.

8. The next shot is of two mandarin ducks playfully swimming together, to bring a sense of foreshadowing, the camera pans out revealing Sofia walking across the park in search of the Kite. She sees Bagboy's silhoutte on the horizon...with another girl! Sofia is shocked and surprised.

9. Walking off in sadness, she arrives back to her usual spot, and we see the drawing has been crumpled and ripped apart. We hear the sound of heavy breathing and Bagboy runs into scene, Kite in hand, he composes himself and offers the Kite to Sofia like any other day, Sofia however ignores the gesture in a fit of anger. Bagboy remains persistent.

10. As the tension between the two rises, Sofia angrily picks up the drawing and chucks it at Bagboy, knocking him slightly askew.

11. Bagboy walks off sadly, and Sofia looks back one more time, with a slight sense of sadness and regret on her face. Later in the day Sofia is sat on the fence, the sun begins to settle and Sofia decides to head on home.

12. Kicking the spindle Bagboy left behind. Sofia walks past the park and in the corner of her eye she sees a sight that makes her do a double take on herself.

13. She sees Bagboy sat on a bench...but she also sees the same couple from before? Sofia looks even closer at the couple and realises that that boy is a completely different person! Mortified, Sofia runs off the scene leaving us with a sad looking Bagboy on the bench. Sofia approaches behind him and he turns around.

14. Sofia is stood there with the spindle in her hand, Bagboy's spindle and Kite. Bagboy then reveals himself from under the paper-bag and we see that he is in fact just an ordinary young boy. As the two walk off hand in hand with the spindle we see other couples around them, some boys have bags on their heads as they are chasing after their girl whilst others do not; further conveying the idea of the "paperbag" being a metaphor for shyness and insecurity.

END.
